Vista RTM Windows Experience Index

I'm running Vista RTM on a desktop. I've just bought a RADEON 9600PRO (256Mb)
video card. I have installed latest ATI Catalyst Vista drivers. When I update
my Windows Experience Index I still get a rating of 1.0 for both graphics and
gaming graphics.

The strange thing is that Aero can be enabled...

Any ideas why the Windows Experience Index is not updating correctly

Not sure why you are getting those numbers in the Index.

The Radeon 9600 is a directX 9.0 piece.

To have AeroGlass Microsoft says you need:

DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)2,
Pixel Shader 2.0 and 32 bits per pixel

All of which the 9600Pro support...

Just out of interest, what HDD setup do you have there? I have twin
10,000rpm WD Raptors in RAID0 and I have only got 5.9. But somebody in MS
has told me that currently teh top score for any value in WEI is 5.9. My
overall score is 5.5 :p

Certainly strange as my X1900 gets 5.9 which in my view it shouldn't as
newer better cards are out there. Ill have a look at one of our PC's
that has a 9600 in there.

AFAIK, however fast anything is, at present it will only get 5.9 at the
most.

I am told that later, with Windows Updates, higher scores will be possible
as technology develops.

I had the same issue. I had a Radeon x850XT with 256 MB. But for some
reason it was only giving me a rating of 1.0 for both graphics and gaming as
well. However, I recently upgraded my Motherboard, and that score jumped to
5.5 (if I remember correctly). After looking, my previous motherboard only
supported AGP 4x and had some other graphics features for the AGP slot
disabled. I was always able to run Aero on it, but for some reason the
rating was just screwed up.

My new motherboard supports 8x agp (along with my new E6600 Core 2 Duo chip
and DDR & DDR2 memory, so it was a nice upgrad). Maybe there is something
with the motherboard or drivers for the MB chipset that would impact the
performance rating.

Now thats interesting. I've got this exact problem too.

I've an ATI Radeon X1300, which has 1.0 for both graphics and gaming, though
Aero can be enabled. Its using DirectX 10, and has Shader Model 3. Also the
catalyst software says its using AGP 8x

Going to check the motherboard now.

Cheers for that!

I have the same issue with Windows Experience Index on my x86 platform:

Athlon XP 2500+ @ 1833 mhz
MSI KT6V 2.0L bios - Via KT600
HiS Radeon 9600 128 mb
1 gig DDR400 @ 333

I've noticed that this issue happens mostly on computers with Via chipset.
And there is something interesting from WinSAT.exe (Windows System Assessment
Tool) log:

"[...]
11938484 (3404) - winsat\main.cpp:1436: > Assessment completed
11938593 (3404) - winsat\processresults.cpp:0672: Total physical mem
available to the OS : 0,99 GB (1 072 627 712 bytes)
11938703 (3404) - winsat\processresults.cpp:0861: Limiting DWM Score to 1.0
- no DWM performance score
11938703 (3404) - winsat\processresults.cpp:0965: No D3D results - limiting
D3D Score to 1.0
11938968 (3404) - mlib\syspowertools.cpp:0904: > Set the active power scheme
to 8c5e7fda-e8bf-4a96-9a85-a6e23a8c635c'
[...]"

And generally that rating doesn't affect general graphics performance
(tested with 3dmark 2003), aero is working too. When i try to run WinSAT
manualy (with command "winsat dwm" in administrator's command line) i'm
getting message that capabilities of graphic card cannot be checked because
creating d3d device has failed...
