Virtual printer port disappeared

Win XP Home w/SP2:

After no apparent problems, my USB-connected HP 1220c printer suddenly
stopped working - even from the DOS prompt. Device Manager shows only LPT2
in [Ports], so I ran HP System Diagnostics, which digs a little deeper and
reports LPT1 is 'not connected to the system'.

I assume that the USB printing is via a virtual printer port, i.e. using
LPT1.

Reinstalling the printer software gave no success, so I'm now wondering
whether there's a conflict of IRQ.

Help me save my sanity, please...

Thanks,

RM

Is printer working with another system? If no other system available, self
test works?
