Virtual memory problems

Upon bootup, I get an error message that says - you either have no paging
file or it's too small.......... yadda, yadda, finish booting, go to
computer/properties/performance/advanced/virtual memory, put in a custom
size, usually 1024, for each of my 2 hard drives (which have plenty of
room), apply, ok, etc, get message that says I have to reboot for settings
to take effect, reboot, new settings don't take effect. Several times, I
could see paging files set up on the individual hard drives, but at the
bottom, where it says Total Paging file on all drives, it still says zero.

Thoughts? XP pro, service pak 2.

Any help would be appreciated

Set 'virtual memory' such that Windows manages it.. a computer used for an
assortment of tasks will not benefit from the user manually setting the
size..

The problem is, no matter what I set it to, when I reboot, I still get an
error message saying that I have no settings, and that windows will create a
temporary page file for me. When I then check for the pagefile, it's not
there. The settings simply don't remain thru the boot process. The manual
setting that I made previously shows up in the virtual memory control panel,
but the system never actually set up the pagefile. I hope I am looking for
pagefile.sys in the right place, it should be in the root directory for each
drive, right? I can see most system files I think, but where's the command
to show all the hidden files as well?

Success - As per Alex's instructions, I installed the latest version of
Intel's Application Accelerator, and Voila! - I now have a pagefile

Thanks
