Video won't play PPT 2003 to PPT 2003

Jeffrey Falk

I have a new laptop with win XP Pro and PPT 2003 the same as my desktop.
PPS and PPT files that play perfectly on the desktop will not
play on the laptop properly. When the file reaches the MPG-1 video, I get a
blank screen. If it attempt to install the video into the PPT on the laptop,
It will
not play. All the necessary files are in the correct folder. If I use an
auto Run CD
of the PPT, it runs fine. I'm hopeful someone on this NG can shorten my
trouble shooting.
Thank you.

special attention to section 3 with the screen shots for your registry.

The other possibility is that the codecs for the MPEG-1 file don't exist
on the laptop. That's covered in the multimedia tutorial as well.

I tried to run mplayer32.exe and mplayer.exe both files could not be
found. I attempted to add a window component through
Ctrl Panel-add software Windows. There was nothing about multi media
components except Windows media player
which is already installed and is not causing the problem (I hope). Does XP
Pro have other rules for adding
components(multi media) such as using the operating system disk? Please
advise.

Sorry about the extra post, that's what happens when you work on this for
too many hours.

You're right I should have used the command mplay32.exe instead of playER.
It is in my laptop and operating. Following Sonia's tutorial, I compared
the registers and they match Sonia's exactly. Could the preinstalled music
matchbox (MISMATCH) be causing the problems? If so will uninstalling
MusciMatch
solve the problems or create others. I tried playing the MPG movie in the
PPT file, still no luck it just hangs.
I thank you for your quick response.

I don't know if uninstalling MusicMatch will make any
difference, really, especially if your registry settings
match those in the tutorial on Sonia's site.

PPT 2003, unlike previous versions, actually hands some
media files off to Windows Media Player if it determines,
for some reason, that the MCI Media Player can't play it.
However, in your case it seems that the MPEG is playing in
the MCI Media Player but it's not in PPT. I suspect PPT's
trying to hand it off to WMP even though the MCI Media
Player *should* be able to handle it just fine and that
handoff is failing. Basically, there's something in the
file that is being misinterpreted somewhere.

So -- just to clarify -- when you say that mplay32.exe is
in your laptop and operating, does that mean that your
MPEG plays in mplay32.exe but not in PPT itself? If so,
I'd love to get a copy of that MPEG to submit to
Microsoft.

That doesn't help resolve your immediate problem, though,
I know. The only thing I know to do at this point
(assuming it plays in mplay32.exe but not in PPT) is to
force PPT to use Windows Media Player to play the file.
You'd do this using Insert/Object/From File and navigating
to the MPEG instead of inserting the MPEG using
Insert/Movie/From File.

You can use GSpot to determine what codecs the mpeg file needs.

The mpeg is not playing on the laptop with mplay32.exe or with PPT.
When I tested it (mplay32.exe) on the desktop, I got a message about
mplay32.exe
being in need of repair, I allowed the operating system to repair it. It
appears the Mpeg may have become damaged when
I copied it from the desktop to the laptop. The particular PPT file that the
video played in is quite large and compressed..
I compressed it using a utility I learned about on this very forum.
If I can get some more time tonight, I'll download and test that codec ID
file and play around
with new copies of that video or try to create another.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and help. I'll let the forum know how I
make out.

Mplay32.exe works perfectly now in my desktop. It load perfectly in the
laptop
but when I attempt to play the mpg in question, it lists that particular mpg
as (stopped).
Whether I use play, fforward or whatever, it remains stopped. I have not as
yet tried
G-spot or other files. I'll try to get to it today.
