Video driver upgrades

William B. Lurie

After much searching, I managed (with the help of Microsoft
Online Technical Support) to find that the XP Plus! problem
which I have, was probably caused by the need for upgraded
video drivers. So they led me to the following URL

http://ranger.s3graphics.com/xplib/420xpdrv/

and told me to install the first four drivers shown there.
I downloaded them and saved them, but they are zipped files,
and when I unzip them they lead to folders and in there,
there are myriad numbers of files.

I'd appreciate it if one of the MVPs would be so kind as to
list for me a procedure for installing the driver upgrades,
and thank you.

Hi William,

Once extracted, search the files for a setup.exe one and run it. You will
find that it is easier to right-click and use "extract" first, then run the
setup file (I just downloaded and checked one of the ones you listed, and
there definitely is a setup file).

Thank you very much, Rick. It was easy, with your straightforward
instructions. That's the good news. Now the not quite so good news.
I did 3 of the 4, but the fourth ("NoIShld") didn't give me a Setup.exe
icon to click on. Would you be so kind as to go to that one and see
if I did something wrong, or what? Thanks very much.

Hi William,

You are correct, there is no setup. On this one, locate the ps5333.inf file,
right-click it and choose "install". For this, you will definitely need to
right-click and extract first, you will not get the install function
otherwise.

Right you are again, Rick. I could never have guessed which one to
operate on. I did as you said, right-clicked and chose 'install', and
it just refreshed the screen, sort of. Is that okay, no Wizard and
all that?

Hi William,

Sometimes with .inf files that is normal. Have the updates helped?

Bad news and good news, Rick. Bad Landscape pictures still
half screen area. Good we don't appear to have broken
anything. The Microsoft Online Support Tech advised that we
could reinstall Plus! or we could wait for the Plus! Upgrade,
the implication being that that wouldn't be too long. She didn't
imply any particular time scale, but did imply that if it wasn't
urgent, and I could wait........Heck, there's nothing hanging
on this. It's just annoying that the poor-man's model (i.e.
without Plus!) makes full sized pictures, and the de luxe model
doesn't. I'd be afraid to uninstall and reinstall, because
Elmer's Law says something else will go wrong. I guess we just
stay tuned and wait for the upgrade....(you wouldn't have an
inside track as to that time scale, would you?).
Thanks for staying with me on this. Some of the MVPs might have
given up before now. After all, it is only an annoyance; it is
still functioning, even if only on 3 cylinders.

Hi Bill,

That's the first I've heard anything about an upgrade to plus - if that
tells you anything. Guess we will just have to wait. Obviously, they know
there are some compatibility problems. Sorry.
