What is the best way ,if any to find out what codecs were
used to create a certain movie. The movie has an .avi
extension. But none of my media players will play it. The
timer runs as if it's playing but no video or audio comes
up.

Go to google and do a search for GSpot Video appliance. Just drag and drop
a video onto this programs icon and it will tell you exactly what codec was
used.
