Very Slow Software Installation

I just purchased a new AMD 3500+ w/1 gb memory, 10K hard
drive. The system is pristine, that is it is three days
old and has Windows XP Pro w/SP2 and Office 2003. No
other application software. I downloaded and installed MS
anti-spyware system and subsequently installed some other
application software. The system slowed down completely.
Installing Office 2003 took 1 - 2 minutes, after
installing anti-spyware, subsequent software (Adobe
Photoshop) took 15 minutes to install.

Does the anti-spyware program interfere with software
installation to this degree? Does anyone have similar
experience? Am I correct that the anti-spyware progrm
slows down application installation?

Any response is appreciated.

You aren't the first to post this observation, although it is very
uncommon--either most people don't spot the issue or it just plain doesn't
happen on their systems.

Here's something that may be useful to try: Follow the steps in the
"workaround" section of this KB article to disable real-time protection in
Microsoft Antispyware:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892375 End users may be prompted to allow or
block administrative actions that originate from a central management tool
after they install Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) on a computer that is managed
by Systems Management Server 2003

You really need to ditch the registry entry--just turning real-time
protection off via the UI doesn't do the job.

See if that changes the behavior?

I don't have any good advice about other workarounds to offer. Perhaps
reinstalling Microsoft Antispyware--on the theory that something about the
particular install isn't quite right.... pretty lame, I'm afraid.
