v1005 firmware for ASUS K8V SE Deluxe problems?

A

ANTant

Is anyone having Windows crashing with blue screens (pagefaults, USB,
ati files, etc.) after upgrading ASUS K8V SE Deluxe 1004 firmware to
1005 with afudos? Disabling cool 'n' quiet feature in CMOS seems to help,
but I still get ATI related errors (stream.sys (TV tuner recorder
codec?) and ati2cqag.dll (Central Memory Manager / Queue Server Module).

I don't think heat is the issue because I had my system idled overnight
(129 (F)/54(C) degrees CPU temperature) and Windows still blue screened
overnight. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance. :)

Yes. But it started even with the 1003 bios. I built a system for a
neighbor - he picked the parts and purchased them. He says he got
occaisonal blue screens but didnt think anything of it. But they got
worse and worse until he couldnt boot up - blue screen. Thats the way
it was this week.

Ive found safe mode generally works but not all the time. Sometimes I
couldnt even get into safemode but eventually I did and there seems to
be something related to Windows updates and the blue screens at least
with this sytem. When you update it , you definitely get a horrible
Blue Screen problem. I cant be 100% sure what its all about but the
main culprit here seems to do with networking. I uninstall the win
updates and it generally tends to work but overall its still pretty
flakey.

In fact I thought 1005 would FIX the bluescreens but I still get them
after flashing. Im not sure if its the same or if it made it worse or
just different. After he backs it up Im going to reformat and then I
can get a better idea whats causing it.

I upped to 1005 a couple of weeks ago. No problems (so far).
Running cool n' Quiet (with a 80 mm constant (low) speed fan on the
heat sink. Heat sink is as supplied with processor, but using a 80 to
70 mm adaptor. Cpu idle temp is ~ 34(c). System is usually on for ~ 16
hours/day. Graphics card is a Nvidia 6600gt, processor is a 3200. No
Raid, or Sata.

This doesn't sound good. :( I am still having blue screens. I belive it
is happening from my ATI Radeon 9800 TV tuner. Not sure yet. I am thinking
of downgrading my firmware back to 1004. :( First, I am going to restore
an older C: partition to see if it makes any difference.

Please let me know your results. :)

i had lots boot/crash problem using Solaris/Linux
upgraded from 1001 to 1005 no difference. mobo rev. 1.12
2x512mb/400ddr pulled one out and lower the speed to 266 then ok.
so either ddr dimm worked alone.
now changed graphics (nvidia 5200 agp 8) to ati9x00 (agp 4x).
now runs ok on 2x512@333, still not ok at 400 !
ram is on the supported list Kingston KVR400X64C3A/512
the tech supp site @asus is down so cant ask them why.

my guess is memory or graphics.

Asus k8v se delux mobo amd64/3200+ Solaris10_b74l1 2x512mb-400ddr.
and use ddr memory on the supported list for your motherboard
kingston kvr400x64c3a/512.

i changed the bios settings for <advanced>
<jumperFree Configuration>
<Performance mode> [auto]
[standard]
[turbo]
from auto to standard and things look much brighter now.
running /opt/SUNWvts/sunvts, 4 passes cpu, fpu & memory @333mhz. (5min.)
looks like my mainboard does overclocking as default, i dont like that ?
i dont.

BINGO! It looks like this was my problem too. I changed that to
Standard and tested overnight. No more crashes when recording! I recorded
about 4 hours (11 GB) overnight without problems!

I still need more testing. I don't know if HL2 and DOOM 3 still crash.
This one is harder since they don't crash often. World of Warcraft was
fine. :)

Was this CMOS option in previous firmwares? I don't remember it.

I did more recording and gaming (World of Warcraft) in a warmer room. No
problems! I will stress the box more this weekend with HL2 and others.

Please let us know how your friend's box goes with this CMOS option. I
wonder if ASUS screwed up.

NOPE !

Everything seemed to be pointing to it but NOPE.
I cant be sure cause its a neighbors kid. I dont know if hes giving me
accurate info all the time. My impression was that it was stable when
I first put it together --- all new parts a few months ago.

He now says he got a blue screen once in a while but it now occurs all
the time.

That part is true. It gets to the point you can only bootup in
safemode and even that doesnt work all the time.

When I uninstall WIN UPDATES it works much better.

I ended up doing the fix in the bios. NOPE no improvement.
I reinstalled windows and it worked perfectly.
Then I added service pack 1 and fixes. Still worked.
Then I added service pack 2 the ultimate test I thought. And it still
worked. So I though its fixed.

With his theres definitely something going on with some win updates
and his network stuff. It could be that something he adds to his
computer is causing it. He took it back and he claims its doing it
again.
