USB printer tries to install every time printer is turned on.

I have a Samsung ML-6040 laser printer with USB and parallel ports. I
recently had to reinstall Windows XP Pro. I re-installed the printer on the
USB port and everything appeared to go smoothly. However now every time I
turn on the computer Windows "detects" the printer and tries to install it as
new hardware.

Even if I go through the complete install procedure again it still does not
remember the next time I switch it on that it has been installed before! I
have tried the latest printer driver to no avail. Is this a known problem
and is there any way of stopping this annoying behavior?

Have tried the "add new hardware" wizard endlessly - workaround does not
work. The registry hack also only applies to a parallel port printer. This
is a USB printer.

Have given up and now connect to printer via a print server, which does work!
