it might be because the usb key storage is not a verified microsoft device
and Vista block all non microsft checked device. Also , if you have McAfee
,which is also non compatible with Vista, McAfee will block the driver update
as a potential harmfull threat coming from an outside website. The best if
it's cause by McAfee, it's to uninstall it as Vista is self protected and got
a efficient windows defender who doesn't have issue with any update.

I dont have any anti virus software installed... Can you disable the "block"
of the device some how?

I've seen several posts about the same problem, so I decided to see what
drivers my DataTraveler uses. Turns out to be the same two drivers that
my hard drives use: disk.sys and partmgr.sys. These both live in the
windows\system32\drivers directory. (Do you have a system64 directory
on your machine?)

So far I haven't needed to install new drivers in Vista, so I'm not sure
how it works. Does the error message offer you any way of pointing to
the drivers you want to use?

Have you tried any other USB sticks in that machine?

Yeah also saw those two drivers on my xp machine.. but I cant get vista to
use them.. There must be some way that you can get a simple usb memory stick
to work...

have you got your sticks to work? I cant get drivers for my mp3, memory
sticks or my cell phone to use my phone software, all work on xp.

I have this same issue with my SanDisk Cruzer 2GB dirve and my OCZ Rally 512
MB drive. Vista Ultimate 64 wants drivers for it. I took the SanDisk back to
Staples to exchange it but asked the saleperson to try it on one of their
Vista boxes first. Their box has Vista Premium 32 on it and it found the
SanDisk right away. Also, I have a PNY 2 GB drive that I use for ReadyBoost
and Vista found it right away and it's been functioning as advertised. I'd
love to see a resolution for these drives not working on Vista.

I too have a SanDisk Cruzer, which Vista doesn't recognize.
At least not the second time I installed Vista.

First time it worked flawlessly though..
First time it wouldn't work in the bottom of my front usb ports, so I
switchedto the top one - and voila.
But this time.. NOPE! Go figure! GRR

It shouldn't need any drivers -- unless you are using the security
features on the USB stick -- I've found that most manufacturers have
not updated the security software so that the secure partitions on
memory sticks are not available in Vista. I am hoping that will
change.

after the hardware wizard has done its thing and vista asks for a driver
disc, point vista to the c:\windows folder and to include subfolders. vista
will load drivers then.
