I have Windows XP home edition. Lately when I go to log off a message saying
specialoffers4 ending program comes up. I must then wait for this program to
end before I can log off. Upon a suggestion from posting that it may be
adware or spyware, I downloaded Ad-Aware and ran it. Several threats were
found and removed. I then restarted my computer and logged back on, then
off. Unfortunately the same thing(Specialoffers4 ending program) came up
again. Something new came up first though, this time before the
Specialoffers4 message it said Socket Notification.

Sometimes you have to run several programs multiple times to get rid of
parasites: > Wherever "Specialoffers" is coming from it probably starts at
bootup. I suspect a variant of NewNet - check these links- especially if
you have KaZa:

Try this program:
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org, help & FAQ @ site.

Check to make sure you have configured Ad-Aware for a deep scan & update as
follows:
Make sure you click "check for updates" above the start button or the globe
icon. *new reference files come out all the time.

Configuring Ad-Aware 6 for your first scan
Ad-Aware 6 comes pre-configured with default options that are already ON
(green checkmark) ... do not change them. The following are changes that you
will need to make to prepare the "Full" custom scan that is recommended for
the first look into your computer (instead of a red "x", you will make them
a green "checkmark"):
Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen to
access the preferences/setting window.
Click the "Scanning" button.
Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard
drives.
Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
Click the "Tweaks" button.
Under "Scanning Engine", select the following:
"Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile" and Under "Cleaning
Engine", select the following:
****"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."**** make sure this is
selected.
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

now on the start page you will find 3 options
smart scan
custom scan
file/folder
make sure you have a check next to CUSTOM SCAN on the LEFT side(use default
scanning options)

When you are finished, you will be using the Custom Scan with Memory and
Both registry scans ON.
Make sure that you activate IN-DEPTH scanning before you proceed.
