Updates to Install

What is the recommended method of installing MS updates. New machine with
XP SP1. Installed the one "critical" update but still showing 15 other
"recommended" updates. Should I just install all of these or try to just
choose the ones that may be applicable? If the latter, how do I do that? I
can, for example, see a reason to install the newest Media Player and
Messenger (since I have some idea what they are) and not the Journal Viewer
(since I don't have a tablet PC). But what about the Jet 4.0 SP 8? Have no
idea what is. Same applies to a fair number of the remaining updates.
Unless I just install them all, I have no idea which ones I need. I've
already got my order in for SP 2.

Usually what I do is read the descriptions and unless I KNOW I don't now and
won't in the future, I install them. For instance, just had to do an XP
reload and of the 13 that were available, I installed 11 of them, leaving
out the Journal Viewer and the NET design thing at the end, since I never
plan to do either.
Not positive, but I THINK the JET if a printing thing somehow. Too lazy
to go look, but unless you KNOW you don't need it, I'd take it.
Also recommend going on the the Office updates below the Criticals and
pull those down too - lots of goodies AND protections in them.

Best practice is to click Windows update and install everything presented. In
that way, you won't be scratching your head a few years from now wondering why
something doesn't work. I have installed everything and have had no problems
whatsoever. BUT, I use no virus programs.

Hello,
It's generally a good idea to take "critical" & "security" updates. Make sure that you see that in the description of the fix (update).
Update for Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 is from KB829558 , first out around November 27, 2003.
It applies if your system has MS Access 2000, Access 2002, MS Office Access 2003.
To get more info on this update, see
Information About Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=829558

If you did not know, "Jet" is the name for the Access database "engine". You'd have it if it came with your Office suite. Or if you have Access.

As these "updates" are offered at Windows Update (or even from Automatic Updates), you will see a link that says "More Info". Click that link & you will see some details.

One last minor point, XP SP2 is not even finished in testing; so I doubt you could have ordered it. Unless, your refer to Office suite service pack..... Office updates can be downloaded from the Office Update website.

Erehwon :
Hang on to the security update CD. It could come in handy in the future. And for the present, it can be used to update other pc's that are in need of updating.

Start, All Programs. At the top of the list, there should be an entry for
Windows Update.

Open Internet Explorer. If you do not have your favorites displayed on the
left, click on the Favorite icon. Then select Links folder. One of the
entries is for Microsoft Windows Update. Or click on Favorites menu and
select Links.

When you are online, click Start> Programs> Windows Update. Since you've
never been there before, the first thing that will happen is a screen will
appear asking if you want to install the mechanisms needed to use the site.
Say Yes. When that's installed, you'll be able to use the site. Cliick Scan
Now and the site will come up with a list of updates. Critical updates are
in one section: these fix security holes.

The second section is "recommended" - use the links to read the detailed
info about the update. Decide if you need it or not. No rush for these as
you can always come back for them later.

The third section is Drivers: Nice feature but tread lightly here. These
are WHQL drivers. They have been tested and have received a "stamp of
approval." However, you will often find drivers with more features (and
sometimes newer and more efficient) at the manufacturer's or Dell's
website.

Or alternatively, go to the following website and scan your sytem for
needed updates. You will then see three lists among the updates to
install. Critical Updates and Service Packs are the ones that really
ought/need to be installed.

When visiting Windows Update, to download or install, close all other
applications, especially any AV prgram you may have.

See if this link helps.

The screen that comes up initially has a green icon labeled "Scan for
Updates". Click on the green icon and your computer will be scanned. After
the scan you can select updates to install. Sometimes you can select
several. For some critical updates, Microsoft requires that you install
that update prior to being able to install others. If that happens you need
to go back to Windows Update {after any necessary reboot} and scan again to
select additional updates.

As to the failed installations, you may have your computer set to
automatically install critical updates. Right click on My Computer and
select the Automatic Updates tab. Review you settings. Microsoft servers
may have been overloaded . In any case, ignore the failed update and scan.
