Updater Works Fine

I wanted to give Robin Walker a thank you (whoever you
are) for finding the problem in the lastest BETA version
of Microsoft Anti-Spyware. I was unable to install the
updates due to the flaw that you pointed out. I removed
the 'gcUnCompress.dll' and reinstalled and now the
updates are being installed correctly. I really love this
software. Here is what Mr. Walker posted:

***********************

The correct version is of length 95,448 bytes.

To update your system to install the correct version of
the file, do the
following:

1. In the System Notification Area, right-click on the
MSAS icon and select
"Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware".
2. In Explorer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, locate
the file
"gcUnCompress.dll", right-click on it, and
select "Delete".
3. In Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs",
select "Microsoft
AntiSpyware"
and click button "Change".
4. Click "Next".
5. Select "Update Microsoft AntiSpyware", click "Next".
6. Click "Install".
7. When the re-installation finishes, click "Finish".
8. In Explorer, in folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, check that
"gcUnCompress.dll" is now 95,448 bytes long, by right-
clicking it and
selecting "Properties".
9. Launch MSAS, pull down the File menu and select "Check
for updates" -
this time it really will update your definition files to
the latest version.
10. In Explorer, open the folder C:\Program
Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware,
and
satisfy yourself that the modification dates of the three
definition files
have changed:
gcDeterminationData.gcd
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

Done!

Sorry but that DOES NOT WORK! I tried Robin Walker's
suggestion on three (3) separate systems (XP PRO, Tablet
PC 2005 & Windows Server 2003) They all keep repeating
the update from 5733 to 5735!

I just found that out today when the new? update came
out. It constantly updates to the latest update and
repeats the update everytime you click on... update. Was
hopeful that it was "THE" solution and tried Mr. Walker's
solution and it worked until the newest update came out.
Now it's repeating the same update. The updater is not
working properly. I have also noticed it doesn't scan
very many files for spyware. I guess we wait for
Microsoft to fix their update problem. Also can't view
the Hosts Files, anymore.

Frustrated....

Mary, can you read Robin Walker's message of today, in the last hour or so:

"The 5735 update failures: analysis"

He has some thoughts that may fix the issue for some. There also appears to
be a class of folks for which none of his suggestions do the job.

Yes, Mr. Sanderson, and is like a foreign language to me.
My updater updated version 5733 to 5735. Then when I
click on update, again, it repeats the procedure.

NOW (several hours later) I just clicked on update once
more and evidently the update 'took' and stated 'most
recent updates installed' instead of that
repetitive 'updating from 5733 to version 5735.' All of a
sudden it is working again and had done nothing new to
change it. It just took the install.... correctly!!?? I
think this thing has a mind of its own??

I had deleted the 'gcUnCompress.dll file that Mr. Walker
had mentioned, then went and clicked on add/remove and
proceeded to click on 'change' on the Microsoft Anti-
Spyware icon in that area and then updated it. That
worked for awhile and then it started showing the same
update versions again, today. Where do we find out where
the newest update version is? Is there a website that
will show us or are we to trust the 'updater' to update?

Tomorrow it will probably do the same thing. Is really a
stumper....... I sure liked the older BETA version. That
worked O.K., other than the updater would freeze, at
times.

Help!

Thank you much for your reply.

The newest update, at this time, is 5735. There's a KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892519

but it is often one version behind the latest.

Sometimes updating fails because of issues at the far end of the link--i.e.
the server end. However, in that case, I don't think you see any indication
of update activity--it just says no update available, when you know
perfectly well that there is.

Lets hope that your particular install has settled down and will fly right
from now on.

Thanks, Mr. Sanderson. I will make note of your posting.
My updater is still updating correctly as of this time.
It shows the most recent update version as well. I hope
all the kinks get worked out as I really like this
software, otherwise.

Good night or morning, depending.
