unlock aspect ratio settings in media player

hi i have xp home running on a fujitsu amilo d1845 laptop
with a radeon 9700 mobility on a 15.4" widescreen tft. my
problem is if i try to stream video files from the web
such as film trailers or web tv, media player 10 keeps the
aspect ratio the same as the original file. this can
result in a video file only using part of the screen and
having borders on the top\bottom and down the sides.
is there any way to change this via either a third party
app or a reg setting so i can change\disable the aspect
ratio settings or zoom and streach the picture to suit?
