Two Personal Folders in Outlook 2003

B

Ben Collins

I moved my .PST file from my old PC that was using Outlook
98 to my new XP driven PC that uses Office and Outlook
2003. I had to rename the .PST from PERSONAL to OUTLOOK
in order to get it work. Trouble is there are two (2)
PERSONAL FOLDERS in Outlook 2003 that are identical,
except for different icons. One icon looks like
a "house", the other looks like a "card or address file".

Any suggestions on how to get rid of one of these would be
greatly appreciated. I'm over my head, and Microsoft's
support areas are no help.

Thanks. Ben Collins

If you can't delete the duplicate .PST by either right-clicking the root
folder and selecting Close, or by deleting it via File | Data File
Management, you have two other options. You can either follow the
directions in http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/oltrble.htm#disconnectpst, or
you can create a new mail profile. If the instructions in the above article
don't work and your .PST file becomes inaccessible completely, don't
worry -- creating a new mail profile will fix it, and you won't lose any
data (just point the new profile to your original .PST file).

Note -- if you have trouble finding the registry key described in the
article, just search for a key with the word "subsystem" in its name and you
should find it.

Thanks Jocelyn,

Plz note, there is only ONE .PST File, but there are TWO
Personal Folders. It scares me a little when you talk
about fooling around with things in the registry. I
always thought this was not for the average user.

I'll take a look though. If you have other thoughts, I
would appreciate hearing them. Thanks. Ben Collins.

Jocelyn,

Please also note, the info in Troubleshooting Tips refers
to Win95 and NT. I am using XP....sorry I didn't mention
that.

Thanks.

I understand...the extra set of Personal Folders is the "ghost", since it
points to the same .PST file as the original set of Personal Folders. Since
you are not comfortable editing the registry, the best thing for you to do
would be to create a new mail profile, add your .PST file and e-mail
accounts to it, and delete the old profile.
