Two drive letters assigned as primary partition??

Hello

I have the following logical drives on our Windows 2000 Server SP 4:

C: - primary partition
D: - extend volume
E: - extend volume

However, another drive (F:) is showing up that is pointing to the primary
partition, the C drive. For instance, when I open the F drive it contain the
same content as C. When there is a change made to the C drive, it is
reflected in the F drive. Also, “Disk Management†shows drive F, D and E but
“Disk Defragmenter†shows C, D and E

The disk configuration is a Dynamic, three drives with a raid controller
(RAID 5)

This problem is preventing me from upgrading to Windows Server 2003, so any
ideas or comments will be appreciated.

This is the only thing showing up in “Event Viewerâ€

What you say does not sound right:
C: - primary partition
D: - extend volume
E: - extend volume

I suspect that you have one primary partition and
and extended partition with two logical drives inside,
D: and E:.

To find the reason for your duplicated drive letter, do this:
- Start / Run / cmd {OK}
- Type these commands:
net use {Enter}
subst {Enter}

Does one of the responses list drive F:?

These articles may help. Also there is now a v2 of the rollup but WU won't
suggest it if v1 is installed.

The system alternates between the original system drive and the new virtual
system drive letter every time that you restart so I'd restart and make sure
the drive letter is correct and then apply V2

No, both commands did not list the F drive. “Net Use†listed the shares that
were setup for users along with a mapping to LPT1, which is used for printing
from an old DOS application. The second command did not show anything.

Also, whenever I open the command prompt, it opens to the F drive
(F:\Documents and Settings\username).

Lastly, I read a response you made to a post on 5/4/2006 under “Windows
Server Generalâ€. The subject is “CANT’T LOGIN!! (urgent)†You stated,

If the system drive letter is incorrect then you can set
it right by editing this value in the server's registry:
HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices. Simply rename
the drive letter that you noted to C:. You must then
reboot the server.

When I checked this registry key, C was not list but of course F is there. I
am not sure if I should try this or not. I’ll wait for your response to see
how I should proceed.

Thanks,

Thanks for the links! Current v1 is installed so I will install v2 tonight
since a restart is required. I will let you know if it works or not.
Occurring to the article, this may do it.

Your observation in regedit saves me most of what I was
going to say. It appears that your drive letters are mixed
up. You must now rename DosDevices\F: to DosDevices\C:,
then reboot the machine.

The Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 solved the problem with the
additional drive letter is also known as a ghost drive letter. Thank you Dave
