Turn off Spellcheck in French, Spanish, German?

My Word 2003 Spellcheck (Office XP edition) suddenly reverts to the French
(France) dictionary for a few words, then goes to "Spanish (Modern-Sort)" and
then to English (U.S.) (which is my preference), then continues bouncing
between languages. Then I 'll get a pop-up: "Cannot find proofing tools in
German" (sometimes "Danish"). I've tried changing every setting I can find to
default to English US, but to no avail. What can I do? Any suggestions? Does
Microsoft offer a patch-fix for this? I'm an editor for a living and this is
driving me ka-razy!!
