What mobile devices do you recommend taking with you when travelling abroad?

I will be visiting Australia, for 6 weeks, at the end of the year, and would like to be able to stay in touch with family and friends while I am away.

It would be nice to keep people up to date on my travels, with messages and pictures, via Facebook and e-mail etc.

Some sort of entertainment (on-line Games, books etc) whilst flying long distances, would also be handy.

take your normal phone ... buy an Aussie sim card and use that ... or you may incur some astronomical charges.

or buy an Aussie throw-away phone once there. :)

Tablet has a bigger screen for films. Can also play music and perform net functions.

Can a tablet be used as a phone? I dunno.

I am SO out of touch darlinks :D

Can you recommend any tablets please?

What are people's views on the Samsung TAB range i.e. Tab 10"?
