Transient Multi-Monitor Manager causing stuttering

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate Edition on a HP Pavilion zd7260 laptop
(clean install, no upgrade). Lately I have noticed severe stuttering after
restart. The stutters occur once or twice per second and stop the mouse and
all other interface operations halt momentarily. I have found that by
stopping the Transient Multi-Monitor Manager task through the task scheduler,
the stutters stop completely.

I don't see anything in my event logs that seems to indicate a problem state
within the OS.

Has anyone else seen this?
Any suggestions on how to stop this permanently?

I would think you would need a Vista driver. Is the Manager integral to the
video driver or can you disable the Manager and just use the dual-monitor
support built into Vista?
