Tilde (~) in reply window

I have a customer who is running Outlook 2000 SP1 on W2K SP4 and when he
tries to reply or forward emails his message window freezes and inserts a
tilde (~) in the message window. He can still access his menu bar and tool
bar when the message he is replying to or forwarding is up but he cannot type
in the message window.

This does not happen each and every time (but a lot) and it doesn't matter
if he is replying to government, military, or a commercial address.

This is signs of a backdoor trojan Virus,

disconect the computer from the internet and run antispyware and anti virus
software on it

I believe this virus does MASS send outs from your email as well - so if the
computer has been going slow this could explain why
