there are no active mixer devices available

Hi,
I just bought a new HP desktop with XP home in french installed. I
installed, in addition, a XP Pro in english. The audio does not work and when
I open the volume control, it says: There are no active mixer devices
available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and
Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware.
This Program will now close.

I do not have "Printers and Other Hardware" when I go to Other Hardware, it
says that everything works properly, what can I do to hear audio?

Your Control Panel is set to category view (top left), change it to Classic
view
and you'll see Printers and Other hardware. Click it and then click Sounds,
speech and audio devices. Now you can troubleshoot. You may need to install
updated drivers for your soundcard to work properly. You can go to the
manufacturers website and download them free, or check the HP website.

I have well found that. If I troubleshoot, it does not find anything special.
When I launch the driver from the HP site, I have this error message:
Microsoft Bus Driver should be loaded in your system before the installation.
Then, I downloaded the 20020624WinHecT12b file from the microsoft website and
installed it but I still have the same error message.
Can you please help? How can I find the correct driver and install it?

I have your problem too. No audio device is selected when I follow the
instructions below. Have you found any news worth sharing about this? Thanks.

Hi,

Please try the following:

Go to Start -> Settings -> ControlPanel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

or from Start -> Run type in services.msc to launch the services screen.
Herein, find the service named Windows Audio, which manages Windows audio devices.
If this service is stopped then audio and its associated components will not work. Set its Startup property to Automatic so that it starts everytime when you start your system. This should fix your problem.

Hi,
Hello Sachu

I did face this problem just 15 minutes ago, and was going to call my Computer Maintenance person - what would have followed would be 6 hours of gruelling debates over a non-entity of an issue. Luckily, I googled for a solution and came to your answer.

I must thank you for this GREAT solution - it really worked - now my sound drivers are in perfect shape.

Take care
