Windows XP The specified file cannot be played on specified MCI device

WHEN I TRY TO PLAY MUSIC AS A LINK IN MY POWER POINT PRESENTATIONS I GET THE ERROR MESSAGE
"The specified file cannot be played on specified MCI device"

i do not know what MCI device is and this has only happened recently i may have disabled something when i run services application although checking it i cant see anything disabled. my shows work on other pcs and used to on my one please can you help

I'm running 2007 and I had the same problem importing a wav file. I had to rename the extention to "WAV" from "wav" then it worked fine.
