The modem failed to respond

Hi everyone,

I am trying to install a Trust 56K v92 external serial modem to a Dell
Optiplex 170L PC running XP Pro.

I am able to install the modem fine but when I query (under the Modem
Properties/diagnostic) the modem it keep poping up the following message;

"The modem failed to respond. Make sure it is properly connected and turned
o. If it is an internal modem or is connected, verify that the interrupt for
the port is properly set".

Unfortunately there is no Interrrupt or IRQ information available under the
Modem properties. I have changed the Com 1 Interrupt and IRQ for all 4 (Basic
Conf 0000, 0001,0002,0003, 0004) configuration and that did not made any
difference either. I have also removed and re-installed the modem a few times
and that did not resolve the problem either.

Any help/recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

External modems require a Motherboard based Serial port(s) to
function. You need to enter BIOS setup and make sure that at least
one of the two COM ports (Serial A/B) is enabled and set to a non
conflicting Address/IRQ #. Check the Device Manager, Ports to be
sure you have at least one active port. Might also be good to enable
"Show Hidden Devices" and remove any Phantoms in the category.

Dear McCarty,

Thank you for your reply. I have gone into the BIOS where there is 4 option
for COM ports. They are

Auto
Off
Com 1
Com 3.

I have tried all 4 settings and I am still getting the same message. I have
checked the Device Manager, and Com1 port is active port. I have also enabled
"Show Hidden Devices". However I do not understand what you mean with
"remove any Phantoms in the category".

Any other suggestion.

Thanks

Notice the message said: "If it is an INTERNAL modem..." Don't jack with the
IRQs or anything else regarding the serial ports.

Do the modem's lights flicker when you try to access it? If not, the problem
lies within the computer (serial port dead or not activated). If the lights
do flicker, the problem exists in the modem itself.

Replace whatever mouse you're using with an old-fashioned serial mouse. Does
the mouse work? If so, the serial port's okay.

Did the modem ever work? Does it work on another machine? Have you tried
a different serial cable?
