Task Mgr closes

Clean system (new install of W2000 Pro. PIII 256R.)
Hv downloaded Win Updates. Attempting to view task
manager, it appears for a second then closes, same with
RegEdit attempt. Also see little green squares on right
side of Taskbar, when I move mouse over them, they
disappear. Have run Panda A/V and AdAware and both are
negative.
Any ideas--don't see anything in MS KB.
Thanks mucho. Pedro

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

I ran bitdefender (free AV) and it found BKDR.RBOT.MD in
WINNT\system32\sxvhost.exe -- deleted it and T-M and
Regedit work fine. Thanks to Bruce C for his input.
