sir
the machine is low on virual memory .And taskmanager
shows too many processes of system containing a lot of
space of VM size. This scenario arose after some days of
good perfomance. Before that the speed was very good .I
have 256mb ram/2.4GHz/pIV machine.I use 100Mbps lan
connections on which similar other machines are pretty
fast.
SOME of the new processes , some of which were not
earlier,listed there are
cidaemon.exe,SMSS.EXE,CSRSS.EXE,WINLOGON.EXE,SERVICES.exe,
LSASS.EXE,SVCHOST.EXE,CCSETMGR.EXE,CCEVTMGR.EXE,SPOOLSV.EX
E,CISVC.EXE,INETINFO.EXE,NAVAPSVC.EXE,NMSSvc.Exe,NPROTECT.
EXE,savscan.exe,DavCData.exe.,so on
thanks,
prabhat

CCSETMGR.EXE
[This worm also deletes critical system files and changes the Internet Explorer
home page to a pornographic page.]

====
cidaemon.exe = Indexing Service runs in the background and catalogues files so
that you can search for files containing a specific text string.

From Black Viper:
[Indexing Service
This service always has been a major resource hog. I NEVER recommend having
this service enabled. Remove the function via the "Add / Remove Programs" icon
in the control panel (Windows Setup Programs). It uses about 500 K to 2 MB in
an idle state, not to mention the amount of memory and CPU resources it takes
to INDEX the drives. I have had people (and witnessed it on other people's
computers) report to me that the Indexing Service sometimes starts up EVEN
while the system is NOT idle... as in the middle of a game. You may feel, as I
do, that this is unacceptable. If your computer suddenly seems "sluggish,"
Indexing Service is usually the cause of it.]
==
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK
Scroll down to and double click Indexing Service | Startup type: |
set to Disabled | Apply | OK | Close Services.

CCSETMGR.EXE is a low risk virus/worm program.
NMSSvc.Exe is a spyware prog.

Go to this link and download their free prog called Spybot.

http://www.safer-networking.org

Intalling a good firewall will show you any progs that are accessing
the network/internet for whtever reason. Zonealarm has one that is
free and very effective.
Also, you may want to take a look at the system tray (by the
time/date) to see what is running. Most of those progs can be
configured to go away unless called instead of hovering around in the
background where they use sytem resources to remain there.
Your Norton AV program does not catch most worm progs that are
installed along with such inocent sounding progs such as weather bug,
which gives you more than you asked for. Yup, spyware. Harmless, but
they do sap system resources.
Wonder why those neat little progs are free? because they have progs
that hitch a ride and intall along with what you asked for.
Do a yahoo or google search on each of your processes running to find
out what they are.
