Tables, Tables, Tables - FP 2003

Hello,

First, I want to thank all the people who respond to my questions - The
people who respond are always prompt in responding and extremely helpful.

OK - Tables are driving me crazy. I'm trying to setup everything in tables
but it seems everytime I add something to a cell that is larger than the
space there, it adjusts spacing in the columns & cells to the right or left,
which I don't want to happen. Is there a way to "freeze" the spacing in a
cell so that it doesn't adjust when I move things around in other cells or do
I need to create new tables? When do you know whether you should create a
new table vs. inserting a row or column?

I've heard becoming a master of FP tables will allow you to become a master
at web design - is there some class or tutorial anyone knows of that will
help me master tables? I spend way too much time fooling around with the
format/spacing.

Thanks!!!

No, you have to use nested tables (insert another table in to a cell)

In my experience, whenever you reach this point, you have just discovered
Mom Nature's way of telling you that you are not reading the directions, so
to speak.

Discard everything you thought you knew about tables. Now start thinking of
them as stretchy things that want to a) equalize the space usage within, and
b) want to collapse around your contents. Move beyond the notion of trying
to twiddle individual cell dimensions and begin to grasp the enlightenment
of controlling your content. Let the tables collapse - it's what they want
to do, and it's what they are going to do in spite of your most assiduous
ministrations. Begin to think of how your content will SUPPORT the
collapsing table, and you will break through the "Microsoft Word-think"
method of managing tables on the web.

When I create tables, I only use pixel dimensions on the table width. With
the exception of 100% width cells, those are the ONLY dimensions I ever use.

Here are two good tutorials (Dreamweaver oriented, however) on managing both
fixed-width and flexible tables -

Not everyone had problems with tables ... I do not have any problems with design and controlling
tables/cells.

Good paradigm shift,
- but my guess is most users can't get past thinking about the box
or that the box is not as important as the content in it (-;

Yes - definitely. There's something irresistable about grabbing a cell
border and dragging it. Of course, in the new paradigm, this is the worst
thing you can do because it populates the cell with explicit dimensions.
