System reboots/resets in all modes after patch/sms updates

We have been upgrading systems and for the
most part it has gone well.

One system was updated with current patches and
SMS and it resets itself before getting to a
login screen. It resets in all modes safe and
otherwise. It boots to the point where one sees
the background color and then the system resets.

Any suggestions would be welcomed.

We will be trying to boot off the CD and attempt
a recovery next.
