SyncToy doesn't echo all files

Hi there,

i want to use SyncToy to synchronize my F:\Pictures folder with my
g:\backup\pictures folder by useing the echo method. But it doesn't work.
I.E. the preview tells me there are 83 new files on the left side but the
run actions does actually nothing. The folder on the left side contain 183
(new) files und on the right side only 100 files were copied.
Is SyncToy still beta or is it limited to 100 files per folder (or am i not
able to use this toy correctly).

it is likely that it stalled on a file and
the process was interrupted.

you might try to open 2 file explorers,
one for each side and compare the files.

the files on the left side that were appropriately
copied over the right side should be moved out
temporarily into a folder. then proceed to echoe
over to the right with the remaining files on the leftside.

if you keep a close watch, you will see the file names
that are being sync'd and the one that it stalls on.

of course this is not always necessary. there are simply
some file types that cannot be sync'd over and you
likely have one or more of them in the folder pair.

Hi,

thanks for your reply!
Is there any logfile to look at?
All in all it's more than 30 GB i want to echo to my external Drive, so
looking at each is not very feasible.
What kind of file types cannot be sync'd? I don't think i have "unnormal"
files. Most are pictures (*.jpg, *.nef, thumbs.db and the like). I do not
expect problems with such files.

well, there is a log file
that is specifically used by the synctoy
and it is required to be on both sides.

but i am not sure if it is readiable
or a binary. my guess it is a binary file.

and yes, there are files that it cannot
sync such as system files. Informatin
like this can be found for the sync
toy on microsoft.com

the best way to realize what
you have and what can be sync'd
is to initially see what file types
you have been using with your
pc. And it may very well become
a practice of simple file and folder organization.
The snyc is not a operating system backup tool,
but a tool to backup up/replicate personal files.

in file manager you can organize files by date,
file type, etc.... So for this session I would sort
by file type. Then copy each file type to an individual
folder, like docs to a unique docs folder, pics to
another, etc... (windows has already done some
of the work but these are general folders) In each
folder you may again want to create sub folders
for further segregation, maybe by year or something.

Then create your pairs and begin the snyc'g
process over to the right. However, before the
creation of pairs, go to the other computer (rightside)
and create a parent folder called
something like "my laptop files" or "Leftside Files", etc...
And under that parent file, let the sync toy replicate your
pairs of folders. Likewise, if you want to
sync files from the other computer onto
your laptop.

it might not be a bad idea to "run" cleanmgr beforehand
and ensure you wont be wasting any time or space
with useless files....
