It is either that you have a program ( MALWARE ) running
in the background or something damaged in WIndows.

If you go to safe mode, does this still happen?
If NOT, then while in safemode go to start run msconfig
and do selective start up. Unck 1st 2 boxes / system and
win ini. Unck startup items. Go to services TAB at the
top. In here, AT THE BOTTOM, check "hide all mS
services". IF this new window has any items in them unck
them. then press APPLY, CLOSE, RESTART.

If your system is still running ok. then it is something
in the startup group or in the NON ms services causing
the issue.
If going into SAFEMODE does NOT fix this issue then I
would boot off of the cd and press enter - to install a
new copy of XP instead of R to go into the recovery
console
Once you do this agree to the EULA and then HERE you will
have the opportunity to REPAIR the installation.

Don't put an admin password into the system. Something
has probably gotten into your system and damaged a file -

Ck for viruses and maybe even look into a free spyware
removal tool like ad-aware at www.lavasoftusa.com for
spyware.
If you file share - go to add remove prog and remove -
newdotnet or newdotnetdomains / savenow / viewpoint
media player / wild tangent / ...Ad-aware can usually
take care of the rest. Also maybe going into the INET
options window in control panel and in the adv tab -
disable 3rd part browser extensions (requires restart).
Good luck!

Miguelito,

Thanks for the quick and thorough information. I'll give
that a try.

Before I posted, I did boot off the CD, but I was trying
to go into the recovery console. I'll try to install XP
and then do all your other suggestions.

Again, thanks for the great info!!!

Renee
