svchost.exe is using up all my CPU resources

Warren Huber

Can anyone offer any help on this issue? It is making my
rather expensive computer very
not-worth-what-I-paid-for-it.
I have an IBM NetVista P4 2.4GHz, RUnning XPPro, w/120Gb
HD.
There are 5 instances of svchost running, one of which has
suddenly begun to use up all remaining CPU, leaving nothing
for the system idle process, and doesn't want to let go. I
can't nail down the reason, and there is no help provided
by MS or the company that MS tells you to go to. There was
a suggestion the ZoneAlarm could stop this process from
doing this, but it does nothing. There has also been a
suggeation that there is a virus hiding in a hidden, 8Mb
partition somewhere on the drive, and that the only way to
get rid of it is to re-format the harddrive. I am not
willing to do this. There has to be a better way. Can
anybody help???
If you can help, email me @ Warren_Sensei @ operamail . com

Thank you.

P.S. If you spam me, you will beg for your death. Thank
you.

Greetings --

It's perfectly normal to have several instances of Svchost.exe
running simultaneously.

However, if Svchost.exe is using a large portion of your CPU
cycles, it has most likely been "hijacked" by a worm or Trojan. Have
you tried using a decent antivirus application with the most
currently-available virus definition files? A strong candidate would
be W32.Welchia.Worm.

W32.Welchia.Worm a.k.a. W32/Nachi.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.welchia.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms can disable antivirus
applications whose definitions weren't up-to-date, try using one or
more of the free on-line scanners to double-check your system.
