SUS v2 Force Install?

B

Brian Smith

Hi,

I have my SUS policy setup on option 4 (auto download and schedule install)
and no auto reboot enabled, problem is there is no auto install option, a
lot of our users get the notification that updates will install in 5
minutes, but just click No so updates are never installed. I know its not
possible to force install via SUS directly, so I have done it via AD setting
the 'Remove access to use all windows update features' to enabled, this
means users don't get the option to cancel install of updates and patches,
which is good, however it does mean they can't cancle the reboot, which is a
bit of a pain, if the user has work open.

Does anyone know if the auto install feature will be in SUS v2? Can I make a
request to the all powerful at Microsoft that this be included? A 5th option
in 'Configure Automatice Updates' would be good, something like 'Auto
download and Force Install' or another policy setting 'Do not notify user of
updates install' which you can enable/disable to say weather you want to
give users the option to cancel. But it would be good if they could still
decide weather to reboot or not!

Cheers

Brian

fwiw, this has been asked for numerious times. I'm kinda hoping the MS Dev
team makes the prompts more like the SMS or MSN component of popups (or what
i like to call toast notifications) right near the system tray. (1 popup
dialog to inform user install is ready and what time it is going to occour.
a link or option that they select on said dialog to kick the install off
immediately if they so desire. once the install occours, then popup another
that the machine needs to be rebooted (if required) and repeats this popup
every 15 until the user does it.)

outside of that and as far as i know, the beta bits for sus v2 haven't been
released to testers. i'm really looking forward to seeing what ms brings to
the table.

BS,
How are you installing updates to non-admin
workstations. My clients are downloading the updates but
the user rights limitations are not allowing the
installation to occur. What's the deal-io?

SUS 2 when used in conjucntion with XP SP2 will have some unique
features in this regards. Updates will download automatically (if
approved) and when the user logs off the dropdown dialog box will have a
new item (instead of just restart, shutdown, etc.) The new item will say
"install updates and shutdown". (approximately)
