Sudden reboots, Event ID 1003, 0x0000009c

I have a PC (Intel based running XP Pro SP3) that keeps rebooting suddenly
(even with Error Reporting enabled). In the even log afte it reboots I get
the following:

Event ID: 1003
Source: System Error
Error code 0000009c, parameter1 00000000, parameter2 805545f0, parameter3
a2000000, parameter4 84010400.

I under stand that this is some type of hardware issue (possibly a driver,
possibly a failure, etc....)

I have run diagnostics on the memory, processor and hard drive to no avail.
The CPU and board temperatures appear normal. I would like to narrow down
the posibilities if possible.

Suggestion on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Larry

See if any of these would apply to your situation:

Background information on Stop Error message:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms795775.aspx

0x0000009C: MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION
(This is a hardware issue: an unrecoverable hardware error has occurred.
The parameters have different meanings depending on what type of CPU you
have but, while diagnostic, rarely lead to a clear solution. Most
commonly it results from overheating, from failed hardware (RAM, CPU,
hardware bus, power supply, etc.), or from pushing hardware beyond its
capabilities (e.g., overclocking a CPU).

Is the computer a desktop or a laptop? What make and model?

Check that all fans are working. Remove dust and hair from inside casing
using Air Duster?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for the links, I'll have to go through them in a bit more detail.

The system is a whitebox desktop with an Asus P4P800 motherboard (Intel
P4, fairly common mb). It is not being overclock, I already cleaned it out
and checked the temperature on a reboot in the BIOS, everything in that area
looks normal. Took out one memory stick and then the other, same results -
also ran memory test and CPU tests over an extended period, no failures.
Even swapped the CPU.

I've got a bit more research to do from those links, but it looks like the
mb is heading for the graveyard....

Let me know if you have any more ideas.

Thanks,

Larry

Before you go scrapping hardware, have you tried backing up your data and
re-formatting? I got this same error message abt 3 weeks after a fresh
install of XP MCE 2005 (XP Pro build) /w SP3 and Update Rollup 2. I
re-formatted and have never seen the error since.

It's always a good idea to re-format before replacing hardware. Recall the
syntax of the error stating this may be a hardware _or software_ issue.
