Stop NetBIOS lookup for missing mapped drives

I have recently upgraded to XP.
In our development environment we have a number of
development systems from which we map drives.

When ever I browse the network, XP is sending a NetBios
session request to every mapped drive and hanging for a
long timeout (> 2 minutes) if the system that is sharing
the drive is not currently up. So if I have 3 systems
mapped and 2 are currently down, every click in explorer
hangs for 4 minutes.

Can someone tell me how I fix this. It's mad.

Thanks
Mark.
