My grandson dropped or knocked my laptop and now when windows xp and now I
get this error. STOP: C0000221 - Bad Image Checksum. User32.dll is possibly
corrupt. The header check sum does not match the computed check sum. I know
I have to replace the user32.dll file. The problem is I moved and still
looking for my disk for my laptop. I found the file on the internet but I
don't know if this is the right version. And if I down load the file how can
get it on my laptop. I can't get into safe mode = well until a certain
point. My desktop has Windows Server 2000 and the other laptop has vista.
Negibors not awake yet has Windows xp home I think. What to do?

It is more probable that your grandson has physically damaged your
laptop than that the issue is software (Windows). As for replacing the
XP disk, contacting the laptop mftr. for replacement would be the
smartest step. You're probably going to need to call them anyway to get
the laptop repaired if there is more wrong than simply a bad hard drive
(my guess is the hard drive but it could be worse).

So before going further with software solutions (Windows), test your
hard drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s
website. You will create a bootable CD with the file you download. You
will need third-party burning software to do this such as Roxio, Nero,
or the free CDBurnerXP Pro.

http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If it
fails any physical tests, replace it.

If the hard drive tests good, then you might want to do a restore to
factory condition. Either call the laptop mftr. as I suggested or refer
to your laptop manual to see if there is a hidden partition with the
factory image on it and how to restore it.

If yours is a branded laptop goto your manufacturers website download and
burn the harddrive diagnostics tool to a cd then run the diag in the
laptop. If harddrive passes the test then search the newsgroup postings to
know how to recover the data when windows fails to boot.

Well I found the Windows XP Cd and extracted the user32.dll and now it is
running ckdsk for at least an hour or more only at 16 percent sales replacing
bad clusters in - the program path and file name - after every ane it says
(null). Maybe that is bad clusters?? Should I continue to let it run -
reload windows or ??? I have the extended warranty. Good to I think april
09? course I need to get the data off?

Get the data off. I still think your hard drive is damaged. I already
gave you the method of testing it.

I agree. Get the data off. The more you play around with it the closer you
might be getting to an inoperable hard drive. Anyway, after you copy off
the data you can go back to running Chkdsk again. But first protect the
data.

Your Harddrive has suffered physical damage. Its not always easy to recover
data from harddrive which has physical damage. Its time to replace the HDD.
