Startup Screen Hangup and slow performance.

I am currently working on a friends computer and trying to fix some little
problems. The first problem was very slow performance loading the profiles
(they had 4). So I put in a 256mb memory upgrade because the system only had
128mb. Seemed to help some. The system still lagged and I ran spy ware and
AVG on it and turned up nothing. This PC should be running faster than mine
(they have a 1.6GHz I have a 1.4GHz) but is nowhere close. I recently
updated with all of the XP Home updates and still no luck. Now when the
computer starts up the Windows XP Home screen comes up (the one with the blue
status bar that goes across the middle of the screen) and flashes black and
then brings that screen up again. It then brings up the blue welcome screen
and locks. If I use ctrl-alt-del it continues but I shouldn't have to. Your
help is appreciated.

Go to Start/Run, and type MSCONFIG then look at the STARTUP TAB, to uncheck unwanted, checked items

Come to find out it was a program called Intel Application Accelerator. Once
that was removed, it worked fine. Thanks for the help though.
