Startup repair failure

Hi guys, long time listener first time poster

I have been using Vista in all the pre releases etc and since buying this
computer have been using Ultimate. Since day 1 of Vista release. 2 Days ago
my laptop failed to boot and gave me an "operation error"

i have gone into startup repair and while it is able to work out that it
didn't boot properly it is unable to fix the error

any ideas? or am i destined for a HDD data recovery and a re-install
(really hope not) :)

Thanks

Can you think of anything you did, installed, added, removed prior to the
advent of this issue? If yes, if you can get into Vista Safe Mode, boot the
system, start tapping the F8 key until you see the menu with Safe Mode. If
you can get into Safe Mode, you might then be able to undo whatever you
might have done. If you can't get to Safe Mode, you might try disconnecting
peripherals one by one, then trying to boot the system after each
disconnection. The last hope would be to start removing internal devices
one by one to see if you can get the system started.

If all that fails, then yes, I'd say you'd be looking at having to start
over from scratch...remember, good backups are a computer user's best
friend.

it has been reported that to do a repair as you did in xp you perform an in place update.
