I just installed the new HD. I did a clean install of the Windows XP home
edition. When I restart the machine, everthing is fine, mem check, bios,
ect, then here is a long pause (about 30sec) before the windows welcome
screen comes on. Why the pause? and how can I fix it?

You've got your WD drive jumpered as "master", not as "single". Read
the drive installation instructions again.

The pause is the drive looking for a non-existent slave device.
Eventually, it times out and booting continues.

Windows XP has very slow startup and shutdown by default. However, you can
improve this scenario by downloading and installing one of the registry
patches found here http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/registry.htm . The patches
offered are: Windows XP default allstart, safe allstart, and gaming
allstart. These registry patches are designed to optimize services within XP
resulting in faster startup and shutdown times, and smother operation of the
OS. I personally install the "safe allstart" whenever I do a Clean install.
In addition, I follow (for the most part) Black Viper's super tweak Guide
found here http://www.blkviper.com/Articles/OS/OSguides.htm. Generally, I
perform the following whenever doing a fresh install:

1. Install WinXP
2. Install Service Pack 1
3. Install NIC and get updates
4. for AMD based system (VIA chipset): install latest 4-in-1 drivers
for Intel based system install Chipset INF and Intel application
Accelerator (in this order!)
5. Install |Video Card drivers
6. Install Sound Card drivers
7. Install remaining hardware drivers (for whatever hardware not listed
here)
8. Enable USB 2.0 support (and firewire if applicable) from within bios.
Windows will automaticly install drivers upon reboot.
9. Follow Black Viper's "Super Tweak Guide"
10. Install Black Viper's "Safe Allstart" for your version of Windows XP.

**Before begining with step 1, insure your boot into your bios and DISABLE
any onboard devices such as sound, firewire, and USB 2.0 support. The only
exception is your onboard NIC. Trust me, life will be alot easier if you do
this. When you hit step 6, if using onboard sound, simply boot into bios and
enable it. When the system boots into WinXP, install your drivers in
accordance with the instructions. When you hit step 8, do the same thing:
boot into bios and enable USB 2.0 and Firewire, save & exit, then reboot.

The above advise is the result of alot of "trial-and-error", internet
research, and actual reading of the manuals and "readme" files that actually
came with my hardware/software.

Hope it helps,

D.
