Starting Remote Desktop on Win XP Pro without logging on

Hi all,

I have a Desktop PC with Win XP Pro and a laptop with Win XP Home
installed - both SP2. I'm aware that I can use Remote Client to connect
to my PC from my laptop, once configured on the PC, but this is where
it gets intersteting...

I've recently "lost" my monitor, therefore am unable to log-on to my PC
to set up the Remote Client service to allow connections. My PC has
various logon accounts, therefore does not automatically fully login on
startup, so I don't even think I could login without a monitor, let
alone navigate to the corect menu item to allow remote connections.

Can anyone advise me as to any way I can possibly set up my PC to allow
connection via Remote Client without a monitor? I have a PC, a laptop
and a cat5 cable at my disposal...

Thanks in advance

The big hitch is you need to setup your desktop BIOS so the PC boots without
a monitor. Once you do that you could access the desktop using XP Pro Remote
Desktop (or other remote access/control programs like VNC) in a 'headless'
configuration. See these threads for discussions of that...

Until you do that your out of luck. I recommend bringing the desktop to a
family members home or a friends house, get the PC BIOS setup, get Remote
Desktop configured, test it there if possible, then return home. With a
cross-over cable you can connect the laptop directly to the desktop or if
you have a small LAN connect over that.

Many PCs will happily boot up without a monitor and without
changing any BIOS settings.

You'll have to borrow a monitor in order to set up Remote Desktop
and/or WinVNC. Once you have the PC configured you will have
no problem accessing it from any other PC.

Seeing that every man and his dog is moving towards LCD monitors,
second-hand CRT monitors have become very, very cheap. Why
not buy a replacement?
