specified print monitor is unknown, Lexmark installation failed

Windows XP Home SP2, Compaq Presario V2000, Lexmark 640 (actually
Z645) printer

When I try to install the software from (I also tried using the cd)
the Lexmark site http://support.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/support.cgi?lxkprod=Lexmark+Z640
the installation fails near the end and I get the error:

An error occurred during the installation of the device
The specified print monitor is unknown.

I tried running sfc /scannow because someone with a similar problem
said that worked. No help.

The printer previously worked on this machine.

What's a print monitor? How do I get this software to install? What's
going on here?

On that ( http://support.lexmark.com/cgi-perl...0:547:0:0&framed=&docid=ENUS13422&relevance=0
) KB Lexmark page there are a few differences in the situation.
The model of printer is not included, but they offer a comment
indicating that may not be necessary.
On my system, the files
Lxdaw2k.inf setup information
Lxdaw2k.ini configuration settings
Are located in C:\Lexmark\lxk640\drivers\WIN_XP2K
Which is not exactly where the page says they would be.
There is no step identified as 6 through 10, but I assume they mean
void out the LanguageMonitor= lines.
There is only one instance instead of 2 of the string,
languageMonitor=
Anyway, lets see how it goes...

Well, when I use the add printer wizard, there never is an option to
"browse" so I can use the modified inf file. I proceeded with the
installation anyway, and it had the same result. The printer doesn't
install; the icon for the printer doesn't appear; the same message
appears, may not work properly the language monitor is unknown.
The question now is how do I invoke this browse option?
I'm going to send this, reboot, and try again.

Use Have disk in Add Printer Wizard. If you are running a Lexmark setup
program then you need to ask Lexmark.

I gave up. I probably spent 16 hours on this problem.
I did figure out what they ment by "browse", but it still didn't do
any good.
