sp4 installation errors

I see one similar post here, but no replies from MS. Sure would be nice to
get some input from you guys (MS)...

At the end of my installation of sp4, I get a dialog box with the title:
sp4iis. The error message is "Unable to connect to metabase".

I click OK and immediately get another dlg with a title of sp4iis. The
error message is "Setup failed to remove ism.dll script mappings. Service
Pack Setup will abort".

Immediately followed by another dlg titled "Service Pack 4 Setup Error".
The error message says "An error in updating your system has occurred.
Select Ok to undo the changes that have been made...blah blah blah."

I tried to install sp4 3 times. The first time I though I might have got
this because I left Outlook open. The second time was after a fresh reboot.
The 3rd time I had stopped every service on my notebook that I dared stop.
Every time ended with this same exact error.

My notebook is running Win2k sp3 with every available critical update.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Andre

I don't know what the error is. I would guess it has to do with Internet Explorer, but that is a wag. For what it's worth, I have
updated several sp3 computers from the network download version and had no trouble at all. - actually there was a problem with a
200 gb disk, but I have proved (to myself anyway) that it was not a problem with sp4.

the metabase is the information store for IIS. this is were all of
the configuration (virt. hosts, cacheing, error mesg., etc.) is
stored. are your running iis? that is where I would start looking.
