SP2 preview action - windows picture and fax viewer

Windows XP SP2 image open/preview issue:

I want to be able to click jpg files and have the Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer launch first (like it did before I
installed SP2).

Then, when I click the "edit" button in the Viewer, I
want my associated photo program to launch (like it did
before I installed SP2).

How can I fix this SP2 issue?

If you Right Click an image choose preview and it should open in the Windows
picture and Fax viewer or to Associate your files with Windows Picture and
Fax viewer open Windows Explorer Go to Tools | Folder options | File Types
Tab | Select the image extension that wish to change the assocation then
click change choose program and check the box "Always use the select
program to open this kind of file" or Right Click an image file | Opens With
| Choose Program and check the box "Always use....."

Paul,
Select the image extension that wish to change the assocation then click
change choose program and check the box "Always use the select program to
open this kind of file" or Right Click an image file | Opens With | Choose
Program and check the box "Always use....."

But you have to repeat this for all different image files (jpg, gif, tif).
How can the pre-SP2 behaviour be restored for all image files at once?

Other than changing association for each image format the only other way
would be to do a system restore prior to XP SP2 I don't recommend rolling
back.

Prior to SP2 Right Clicking any image selecting preview would open in my
default image editor associated with that images format but now after XP SP2
when I select preview the images open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer so
you may want to try that and see if it will work for you.

What I want is my original behavior:
Double click - Picture and Fax Viewer
Click edit icon in previewer - Associated App (Paintshop Pro)

All I can get now is either of the following two scenarios you
describe:
1.
Double Click - Picture and Fax Viewer - Yes!
Click edit icon in previewer - MS Paint - No!!!!!!

OR
2.
Double Click - Associated App (PSP) - No!!!!
Right Click - Preview - No!!!!
Click edit icon in previewer - Associated App PSP - Yes!

I guess I can live with 2 but by dad is an old dog who just gets by
with his PC and this is a new trick.

Double click - Picture and Fax Viewer
===========================

To Associate your files with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer open Windows
Explorer Go to Tools | Folder options | File Types Tab | Select the image
extension that you wish to change the association then click change choose
program and check the box "Always use the select program to open this kind
of file" or Right Click an image file | Opens With | Choose Program and
check the box "Always use....."

You will need to do this with all image formats you want to preview in
Picture and Fax Viewer

==========================================
Click edit icon in previewer - Associated App (Paintshop Pro)
==========================================

To change the edit command in Picture and Fax Viewer do the following

Go to Start | Run | Type regedit

In the Registry Editor find

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

Click on the key and Replace Value Data with the path to the program that
will
be your default image editor such as

"C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 8\Paint Shop Pro.exe"
"%1"

Images will open in the Picture and Fax Viewer but if you left click the
Edit button images will open in the image editor you chose.

Ahh, excellent, thanks Paul for taking the time to reply. That works.
I just upgraded my wife's notebook to SP2 and she too was annoyed by
the change so your fix is good
