sound tests show okay, but still no sound from CD or games

Recently upgraded from Windows ME to WIndows XP. When I
complete the sound tests everything shows okay, but I
cannot play CD's, or get the sound from the one game I
play (Bejewelled). I have followed all instructions. At
times my system even shuts down on its own and reboots.
This is very frustrating. I have an IBM AMD Athlon and
when I have contacted them, they insist it is a Microsoft
problem. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Upgrading is messy, a clean install is the best thing to do.

Have you checked to make sure that the volume sliders are up to maximum and
that nothing muted ? Double click on the loudspeaker icone in the systray to
verify.
