Software installation not working

Hi,
I'm trying to install software in a test environment with
a w2k server and workstation. However hard I try, nothing
is being installed or published. There is an event ID 308
(application) logged on the workstation, but no event ID
302, which is apparently supposed to be there. I tried 4
different msi pakages to distribute to users (incl. the
administrator) and the machine. I used different OU's and
tried also to assign a gpo to the site. The output of
gpresult looks o.k. and the files are definately
accessible from the workstation and DNS is also fine.
Other gpo settings are also working. But there is just no
software installed/published. What the h... am I doing
wrong? Any help would be highly appreciated!

Hi Ueli,

Are you assigning or publishing the msi package:

you can assign a package to computer or user
-> user or computer account needs to be in the OU

you can publish packages only to user
-> user account needs to be in the OU

Also, where does the MSI share located?
- if you are assigning to a computer:
-> msi share should not be on an NT4.0 server
-> permissions on the share are important
-> browsing to the share manually and trying to install, does not mean that
computers have access to the share (you are still installing in user context
when you browse to the share)
-> you may want to give "authenticated users" atleast read access at share
and ntfs level on the msi share

Hi Sabin,
Thanks for your reply!
- I've tried both, i.e. assigning (user and computer) and
publishing (only user).
- I've tried different OU's and also the site, and double
checked that either the computer or user was in there
(btw: I went throught the whole scenario about 15 times in
all possible combinations: ou's, published/assigned,
different users, full access rights. It's just not working)
- the msi share is on the same server (w2k) and I gave
everyone full access rights on the share and ntfs level
(and of course: the path is unc)

Any other ideas?
Regards
Ueli
