Slow startup winxp; 2 min. from from Windows Startup to Welcome screen

Karl

I have WINXP PRO on a fast 2.8Ghz computer with 512 MB RAM.
I have defraggged my harddisks, run a good 3rd party registry cleaner, stopped many (most) programs from starting and yet it takes a full 2 minutes exactly from the Windows is starting up screen until the Welcome screen.Other than that the programs and computer runs great.

Any further ideas? To improve Startup?

A simple 3rd party registry cleaner, and youve stopped most programs from
starting, now youre scratching youre head to find out why windows wont
start properly and/or function the way it should....Deep six any registry cleaner,
you might run the registry repair kb # 307545 Then turn on the programs
you shut-down...

Looks like you said you shut off most of the programs ---> I have defraggged my harddisks, run a good 3rd party registry cleaner, stopped many (most) programs from starting....

He said to turn them back on. Where did you get the list of programs to start or stop and how did you turn them off? Did you use msconfig to shut these programs off? Did you try bootvis to run traces on your system?

No, not on a network. I use Cable at home here.

This behavior is associated with spyware programs and viruses. Anti-virus
software and
firewalls do not fully protect your system against the majority of spyware
and privacy threats. Spyware is commonly bundled with software downloads,
attached to e-mails, or transmitted through networks so it can appear to be
legitimate software, but once installed it can be nearly impossible to
detect and remove without the help of a dedicated spyware removal tool such
as:

Ad-Aware 6.0 (build 6.181)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

SpyBot 1.3
http://www.safer-networking.org/

SpyWare Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html/

HiJackThis
http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

Please make sure that you download the updates for each of these programs to
ensure complete detection of known spyware programs. Although nothing is
absolute in removing spyware and keeping it off, downloading and executing
the programs above can dramically decrease future infections.

Also please utilize free virus scans from the following sites:

Trend Micro
http://www.trend.com

Bit Defender
http://www.bitdefender.com

Panda
http://www.pandasoftware.com/

McAfee
http://www.vil.nai.com/vil/stinger

After Spyware / Adware is remove, you may get an error finding files on
reboot

After you use anyone of these programs (with the exception of HiJackThis)
you may receive an error of some sort after rebooting your system. This is
pretty common. Many spyware programs add themselves in the Startup location
and execute when Windows boots. If you recieve an error when rebooting after
removing spyware, do not panic. This is more than likely a startup remnant
trying to access the spyware program that is no longer on your computer.
HiJackThis is a great utility to find and remove these startup remnants.
However, there is a less technical way of removing these items:

(1) Click START to RUN and type: msconfig
(2) Select the STARTUP tab
(3) Uncheck the file that pertained to the startup error message you
received
(4) Click APPLY and OK
(5) Reboot your system

If this fails to fix the startup error message after reboot, there are still
options:

(1) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup
(2) Delete the icon that pertained to the startup error message you received
(3) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start
Menu\Programs\Startup
(4) Delete the icon that pertained to the startup error message you received
(5) Reboot your system

Best of luck!

Andrew: Registry cleaners are a valuable tool to help keep XP running at peek performance. I have used them since the release of XP and now even with XP SP2. Anyone claiming they don't work or cause undue problems say this only because they don't know how to use them or how to configure them correctly. The very best out there is JV16 power tools. Although it has gone commercial you can still find the older versions to dowload that work great. RegCleaner which is free and is the actual registry cleaner from JV16 power tools works exceptionally well with XP and will not give you any problems.

All these answers and not much help. Figures. To begin with make sure that you have run all chkdsk utilities and even gone to your manufacturers site of your Hard Drive and run their diagnostic tools. Get good spyware\adware removal tools. Eliminate as many programs from starting as you can. Go to www.blkviper.com and look at the services configurations and choose the one that best suits your needs. Make sure that you have prefetch enabled in the registry. Keep you system defraged using the defrag tool in XP or Diskeeper which the XP defrag utilitly is based on. Contrary to statements claiming BootVis doesn't improve boot times I have found that using and older version of this tool does work and can cut your boot time in half. Make sure you don't have any programs or files on your desktop. The desktop should only be used for shortcuts. Full files or programs on you desktop add a lot of time to the boot as they must be entirely loaded before you can use your desktop. There is much much more you can do but that should keep you busy for a while. If you need more help then just e:mail me. }:~)

http://www.blackviper.com/ Is a good place to go to switch off unnecessary services that may be loading at start up.

You could also download and run Bootviz to find out graphically where the delays are occurring. I would not bother trying it's optimise button as XP will soon do it's own optimisation.

Clear out all temp files and run Spy ware cleaners such as Ad ware and Spy bot search and destroy.

You might want to try a 3rd party defragger, with some kind of boot
optimization. SP2 replaces lots of key file need for boot and therefore
spreads your boot process all over the disk.

Raxco PerfectDisk and O&O Defrag come to mind.
