Simple Enough Question on installing software...? Or is it?

I'm fairly new to Win2K Pro and ran into a funny quirk when installing
s/w that someone can perhaps clear up easily enough.

I always log out of my user account and in as admin when installing
s/w. Problem is that sometimes the software, icons and such ONLY makes
itself available to admin. Later when logging in as a user - the s/w
is not present or avail to the user. And if I go back as admin and
place some icons somewhere for everyone to see (like default user) -
well the app won't run but 'errors' out instead.

Now this leaves me scratching my head - just what did I do wrong?

Here's a few examples of s/w that seems to work for admin and admin
alone:
Palm Desktop (PIM for palm pilot)
MS Image Composer (replaced by Photodraw now)

1) Where did I go wrong?

2) Or - What's the workaround?

thanks!

Some software writes to HKCU and/or HKLM in the registry,
and places it's shortcuts in the context of the installing user.

You could copy the shortcut and export / import the registry keys, granting your
username the required permissions, or just install with elevated privs.
See tip 3292 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsiinc.com

You can also use RunAS, tip 2548.
