siemens pcmia wireless connection disappears in xp professional

Can anyone help with this wireless dilemna? I have been
troubleshooting for weeks and cannot locate the problem.
The PC is an older Sony laptop. I can get the Siemens
1021 wireless card working but the connection drops off.
The signal starts out strong, goes to poor and then
disappears even though the card indicates (sometimes)
that there is a connection. This happens in a matter of
minutes or hours.

The card has been tested and works fine. After running
XP diagnostics on the device, it shows that several
things such as the DEFAULT GATEWAY; DCHP SERVER; DNNS
SERVER SEARCH ORDER and other items fail. The IP address
passed.

The wireless connection works if I run a cable to
directly to the router.

Can anyone help? I don't have an IT department to
support this pc. I would be so grateful if you could
help.
