Sidewinder precision 2 joystick & XP Prof

I can't get XP professional to recognize my sidewinder 2
(wersion 4.0) at all - 2 other computers I use both with
XP Home edition have found it straight away.
Yes I have remembered to log on as an administrator!
Its not the 'static build up' issue as it works ok on the
other machines.
Can see it in device manager under 'other devices' but
not in game controllers!!
Tried plugging in to several different USB ports (4 on
board one of which has a 7 port hub attached!)
Can anyone help with some ideas?

If you install the driver first either from a CD or
download, then install the sidewinder it might work.
