Should two XP Pro PC's be able to see each other when both connected to ADSL router?

Hi

I have been able to swap files between my desktop PC and laptop when
connected directly to each other via xover ethernet cable.

But when I plug both PC's into my ADSL router they cant see each other.
Although they can both use the ADSL.

I was told they should be able to see each other when connected to the
router (Westell 7400).

Is that correct?

If so what do I need to do to have them see each other?
