on my dell E6400 the bottom gets warm to the touch after I have been using it a while,, should I change my settings in power to hibernate after 20minutes, or stand by

Laptops do get warm at the bottom as standard. Do not use them on a pillow or soft surface of types and try to avoid on your lap as well. Most have vents underneath and the sides so if they are being obstructed needless to say air cannot enter or leave. If this continues you will damage the laptop due to insufficient cooling

choose either, whatever allows you to continue working without the bother of waiting for the thing to restart.

The CPU will just 'throttle back' if it reaches too high a temp, even GPUs do this now.
