shortcuts dont work, links in e-mails dont open - reset to defaults?

Since SP2, links in e-mails, newsgroups, chat clients etc dont work.
Shortcuts on my desktop do not work either, it would open up the window to
choose with program to open it with. If I'd browse to IE and hit open,
nothing would happen and ie wouldn't appear in the list.

Now just today, I started getting a window saying

(X) This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the folder Options control Panel.

So, I check the Folder Options and it turns out all of a sudden there is no
program set for URLs and shortcuts. And then HTM/HTML open with notepad.

Is there anyway to reset this all to defaults so I dont have to manually
choose IE for every url extension?

After trying to add a program to them, IE wasn't in the list of available
programs, so again, I choose other, navigated to IE's exe, clicked open and
it still would not appear in the list. I CAN choose netscape or something
else but I prefer IE. Browser arguments aside, why can't I get IE to appear
in the list anymore?

Okay, that's great, but it's a pretty big hassle considering there are a
bunch more items I think in the list.

I think what's most important to me is why I can't choose openswith IE?
All of the URL:items have the Change... button grayed out so I can only do
advanced.
I still have the problem with HTM and HTML docs where they open with notepad
and I can't change it to IE.

Shouldn't I just be able to set everything back to default or something?

Assuming SP2 == XPsp2, you could be our guinea pig. <eg>

Supposedly XPsp2 has a new "re-register all .dlls" command in it.

Run... iexplore /rereg

Otherwise just Run... regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll

Good look
